Syllable awareness is developed toward the beginning of the phonological awareness sequence of skills. The sequence of phonological awareness skills starts with understanding words in a sentence, recognizing and producing rhymes, and then recognizing and manipulating syllables.

Syllable segmentation activities are easiest with compound words. Comparative experiments show that the syllable-based recognition outperforms the monophone- and triphone-based recognition in noisy environments.

The HTK hidden Markov model toolkit was used. A series of experiments has been carried out to evaluate the use of the syllable as a concatenative unit for large vocabularies.
